Music Tourism: Is It A New Trend?

September 26, 2024

In recent years, Vietnam has become a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists, thanks to entertainment and music festivals featuring renowned Vietnamese and international artists. 2023 witnessed an explosion of music events. Within just a few months, top artists and bands from Vietnam and around the world successfully held numerous concerts, attracting tens of thousands of attendees.

On the evening of July 22nd, renowned singer Charlie Puth appeared at the 8 Wonder Music Festival alongside famous Vietnamese artists, delivering captivating performances that enthralled the audience throughout the 6-hour event. Held outdoors at VinWonders Nha Trang, the concert generated immense anticipation among US-UK music lovers and Charlie Puth fans for many years.

Soon after, on July 29th and 30th, the four talented singers from BlackPink performed at My Dinh National Stadium as part of their Born Pink World Tour, showcasing their most popular songs from nearly a decade of their career. The two outdoor concerts in Hanoi attracted a large number of international fans from countries such as China, Canada, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Singapore. Statistics show that over three days, several tourist attractions and services in Hanoi experienced a 15-20% increase, including Hop on hop off bus Vietnam Sightseeing, Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam (Temple of Literature), Thang Long Imperial Citadel, and Bao Son Paradise Park.

Additionally, the band Westlife chose Ho Chi Minh City as a destination for their The Wild Dreams Tour in late November, with two successful concerts that received overwhelming support from long-time Vietnamese fans and over 1,000 international fans.

This is clear evidence that music tourism is a growing trend in Vietnam, opening up potential for diverse experiences combining music enjoyment, culinary exploration, and visits to tourist attractions and historical sites across the country.

In recent years, annual music shows have been established and organized, such as the "May Lang Thang" show in Da Lat, "Soul of the Forest" in Flamingo Dai Lai Resort, and "Thanh am ben thong" in Ha Long. With a smaller scale and unique performance spaces in destinations like forests, cruise sundecks, or hilltop cafes, these events target customers who can afford day trips or short weekend getaways and seek combined experiences including dining, relaxation, entertainment, and accommodation.

Customers can look forward to outdoor performances at Flamingo Dai Lai starting from September this year, offering a musical experience in a pine forest with multi-layered emotions.

The 2022 show was a huge success, showcasing a diverse range of Vietnamese music talents. Organizers aimed to provide a world-class music experience, complete with top-notch sound and lighting. For music fans, "music tourism" offers a unique opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, explore new cultures, and relax:

  • Connecting with the community: Music tourism provides opportunities for travelers to meet and interact with people who share their passion, fostering new relationships.
  • Expanding knowledge: Music tourism helps travelers broaden their understanding of music, culture, and different civilizations around the world.
  • Diverse travel experiences: In addition to enjoying music, travelers can also visit famous tourist attractions, savor local cuisine, and engage in other recreational activities.
  • Stress reduction: Music has a relaxing effect, reducing stress and helping travelers enjoy a fulfilling vacation.

The surge in music tourism has brought numerous benefits to Vietnam, including:
  • Economic growth: Concerts attract tourists, boost local spending, and generate revenue for various industries.
  • Cultural exchange: International music events promote cultural understanding and appreciation.
  • Image enhancement: Hosting such events enhances Vietnam's reputation as a vibrant and cosmopolitan destination.
  • Local music industry development: Concerts can inspire and motivate local musicians and contribute to the growth of the domestic music scene.

As the country continues to develop its music infrastructure and attract more international artists, it is clear that music tourism will play an increasingly important role in Vietnam's tourism industry. Whether you're a dedicated music fan or simply seeking a memorable adventure, exploring the world through the lens of music can be a truly rewarding journey.

While music tourism offers significant advantages, it is essential to address potential challenges such as traffic congestion, environmental impact, and ticket pricing to ensure its long-term sustainability. By carefully managing these factors, Vietnam can continue to position itself as a leading destination for music tourism in the region.
