NORTH-EASTERN ARC (HNRT-ST 8)

 
The tour "North-eastern Arc" is a great opportunity to discover dramatic landscapes and new cultural places. Discover the grand caves of Nguom Ngao with 800m long then nearby, drive to the waterfalls of Ban Gioc; and visit the largest natural lake of the country, the Ba Be lake. You will visit the local market of the minorities as well to discover the cultural value of the place and the numerous traditional stilt houses which gives the charm of this part of Vietnam.

 
ITINERARY IN BRIEF
D1  HANOI–LANG SON–CAO BANG (L)
In the morning, drive to Lang Son. Along the way, stop at the small Dong Mo Village and continue by the famous road RC4 via That Khe and Dong Khe toward Cao Bang.
Stop on the way for a stroll through Dong Dang market as well as the Nung and Tay minority villages. The sceneries during the second half of the journey are fascinating, offering views on dipping narrow valleys.
 
Overnight in Cao Bang.
 
 
D2 CAOBANG–BAN GIOC WATERFALLS –CAO BANG (B/L)
After breakfast, depart to a local minority market (normally on weekends or every 5-10-20th day of the lunar calendar).
Then visit the beautiful 800-meter long grottoes of Nguom Ngao before arriving at Ban Gioc Waterfalls. The place marks the border between Vietnam and China and the multiple levels waterfall is set in a lush landscape (the level of water varies between seasons).
Return back to Cao Bang in the afternoon stopping, along the way, to visit the hundred-year old blacksmith Phuc Sen Village.

D3 CAO BANG–BA BE–PAC NGOI (B/L/D)
After breakfast, drive to Ba Be, the largest natural lake in the country.
On arrival, board on a small boat to cruise through the Nang River until Dau Dang Waterfalls. Arrive late in the afternoon at Pac Ngoi Village, with more than 40 traditional stilt houses located on the slope of the mountains surrounding Ba Be Lake, which is highlighting the beauty of this famous ecotourism destination.
Check-in at the home-stay in Pac Ngoi Village.
 
Overnight in Pac Ngoi.
Note: Traditional houses in Ba Be are made of wood and offer a basic level of accommodation
 
 
D4 BA BE–HANOI       (B/L)
After breakfast, drive through the well protected Ba Be National Park which is an abundant bio-reserve area containing the world’s only fresh-water karst lake and several rare species of fauna and flora. The bio-diverse 10,048ha park – home to 1,268 species of flora and fauna, a series of caves and a gigantic fresh water lake – was established in 1992 by the Vietnamese Government to preserve forest ecosystems in the northeast.  Then, visit several Tay Villages and then continue by road back to Hanoi.
Stop along the way in several villages to meet the ethnic minorities.
Arrive in Hanoi at the end of the afternoon.

The exception is Tet, the Vietnamese New Year - officially a three-day holiday but many businesses close down for a full week. LANGUAGE : The national language of Vietnam is Vietnamese. In big cities and in places with many tourists, people can speak basic English. As Vietnamese has six different tones, it is a difficult language for most foreigners to speak despite the fact that the Roman alphabet is used in the modern Vietnamese script.

WHEN TO GO?

Vietnam's weather varies greatly from north to south with each area marked by slightly different seasons and climates. Because of these regional variations, there are always pleasant and favorable areas to visit throughout the year. The north, overall, tends to be cooler than the rest of the country. During the winter from November till February, the day time temperature is cool and the weather often damp. Central Vietnam experiences warm weather from July to October and wet, colder weather from November to May. Although the temperature remains fairly steady throughout the year, Southern Vietnam has two seasons. The dry season lasts from December to May, while from June to November is the rainy season
