HIGHLANDS FROM HOI AN (HNRT – ST 17)

The "Highlands from Hoi An" tour will give you the opportunity to get away of the imperial past to go and meet the ethnic groups of the Center Highlands who live in the long  stilt house and which in each of these villages stand a communal house.
You will end this exceptional tour by an elephant ride around the Lak lake, the largest one of the center of Vietnam, in Buon Ma Thuot province, and particularly in Kontum.

ITINERARY IN BRIEF
D1 HOI AN–KONTUM (L)
In the morning, depart to Kontum in the Highlands via the National Road 24. On the coastline, stop near Tam Ky to visit the Chien Dan Cham Tower, a group of three towers built in the 11th century dedicated to the three deities of the Champa Kingdom: Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma.
Lunch at local restaurant on the road.
Stop at the communal houses of various ethnic groups and meet the last minority group of the region - the Hre People -  pass upon pass, valley upon valley; slowly leaving the sea level.
Arrival late afternoon and check-in at hotel.

Overnight in Kontum.

D2 KONTUM (B/L)
After breakfast, visit the seminary and the charming wooden church of Kontum, built in 1913. The prayers are written in the 3 main languages of the minorities of the region. The Holy Masses are usually attended by an impressive crowd; hence, the church becomes too small to welcome all the devotees, who are well dressed for the occasion.
Later, enjoy a walk (around 4 km) through the Banhar villages of Kontum Konam, Kontum Kopong, Konko Wang, Kon Jori and Kon Kotu. On the way, discover the beautiful sceneries of rice fields and witness the daily life of the Banhar people.
Lunch at local restaurant in the city.
In the afternoon, excursion to visit the Jarai Village of Plei Weh and discover their amazing funerary art. Each tomb is surrounded by carved wooden statues representing each stage of the life of the deceased.

Overnight in Kontum.
Note: The visit to Jarai Village is subject to the approval of the Provincial Authority and may be cancelled without prior notice. In this case, it will be replaced by a visit to the artificial Yali Lake.

D3 KONTUM–BUON MA THUOT (B/L)
After breakfast, depart to Buon Ma Thuot (235 km, approximately 5 hours) through numerous tea and coffee plantations.
The striking green of the coffee plantations contrasts with the red color of the soil. On the way, stop at local house to discover how coffee and pepper plants are cultivated.
Arrival in the afternoon and time is at leisure for a walk to the local market, meeting point for countryside’s ethnies of the region.

Overnight in Buon Ma Thuot.

D4 BUON MA THUOT– LAK LAKE – BUON MA THUOT (B/L)
After breakfast, visit the Ethnographic Museum of Buon Ma Thuot, a display of traditional dress, agricultural tools, fishing gears, bows and arrows, weaving looms and musical instruments of the ethnic groups.
In the late morning, depart along the scenic Highway 27 to Lak Lake, located in the heart of a volcanic region. Stop for lunch at local restaurant.
Upon arrival, enjoy an elephant ride around Lak Lake to the village of M’Lieng inhabited by M'nong ethnic group, who has managed to preserve most of its traditions. Head back to the village of Jun for a walk through the village and discover the traditional long houses which can accommodate several generations.
Return to the hotel in the late afternoon.

WHEN TO GO?

Vietnam's weather varies greatly from north to south with each area marked by slightly different seasons and climates. Because of these regional variations, there are always pleasant and favorable areas to visit throughout the year. The north, overall, tends to be cooler than the rest of the country. During the winter from November till February, the day time temperature is cool and the weather often damp. Central Vietnam experiences warm weather from July to October and wet, colder weather from November to May. Although the temperature remains fairly steady throughout the year, Southern Vietnam has two seasons. The dry season lasts from December to May, while from June to November is the rainy season
